There are different types of masks and respirators. The first thing we must determine is whether they are for protection against gases or particles. A gas, such as oxygen or CO2 (carbon dioxide), is "dissolved" in the air, that is, the independent molecules cannot be separated from the air by means of filters; instead, the particles have a weight and a size and are solid conglomerates of many molecules (ash, dust, etc.) and will be subject to the action of gravity. Microorganisms (such as influenza viruses, bacteria, fungi) are particles, and will eventually tend to fall, as gravity will attract them. The microorganisms do not remain in suspension. Viruses do not travel through the environment, since a person who coughs usually expels them accompanied by water and mucus. To provide respiratory protection, they must cover the nose and mouth. The microorganisms can be filtered with respirators.
